Environment
The environment is part of every individual and each of us is part of the environent. This apparently metaphysical statement can be corroborated by modern scientific analysis in that the basic components which comprise the human physical body can be found throughout all of nature. This year, representatives of both governmental and non-governmental organisations will meet, under the auspices of the United Nations, to determine a practical course for the future. The World Summit on Sustainable Development will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, between August 26 and September 4, ten years after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Whatever is then decided, individuals acting in groups, corporations and other organisations will implement and develop the policies derived from the Earth Summit. Our own personal commitment to environmental issues will then - as always - determine the success or failure of Sustainable Development. The U.N. OBSERVER & International Report will continue its coverage of environmental issues and focus particular attention on the coming Earth Summit, while keeping in mind that everything humankind may do - or not do - has some effect on our environment. To ignore the environment is simply self-delusion. |
