Elisa Burchett: Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki to Head U.N. General Assembly



2009-06-10 | Today, the U.N. General Assembly elected by acclamation Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki as the body's next president.
Dr. Treki will take the post at the opening of the 64th Session, in September 2009. General Assembly presidents are elected on a regional, rotating basis and this year’s selection came from the African Group of States.

Dr. Treki, of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Libya's Minister of African Affairs and the African Union's Envoy to Darfur, has a long history in the international arena and has served three terms as Libya's Ambassador to the U.N. Ban Ki-moon welcomed him back, referring to his extensive knowledge of the United Nations.
